San Dimas Community Hospital Celebrates 50 Years of Community Care

Local leaders, elected officials, board members, hospital staff and physicians honor the hospital’s rich history

(San Dimas, California – July 16, 2024) – San Dimas Community Hospital, a member of Prime Healthcare, proudly celebrated more than 50 years of serving patients with quality, compassionate care.

Established in 1971 as a physician-owned facility, San Dimas Community Hospital has been a trusted source of healthcare for the Los Angeles County area, known for its family-like environment and personalized care. In 2008, the hospital was acquired by Prime Healthcare and has since expanded to a 101-bed acute care hospital, continuing to deliver essential, award-winning care to San Dimas and surrounding communities.

Over the years under Prime Healthcare’s stewardship and investments of more than $33 million, San Dimas Community Hospital has seen significant advancements and facility improvements including facility upgrades; new state-of-art hospital beds; advanced lab, radiology and surgery equipment including the DaVinci Robotic System and the Mako Robotic System, and more. Upcoming investments include a new EPIC electronic medical record system later this year.

San Dimas Community Hospital recently launched a new Family Medicine Residency Program in collaboration with Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville, CA and the California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) in Colton, CA. This program, accredited for 24 residents, will develop skilled family medicine physicians through diverse clinical exposure and a commitment to compassionate patient care.

“This anniversary is not just a reflection of our hospital’s achievements, but also a testament to the unwavering support of our community, the commitment of our exceptional staff and physicians, and the enduring partnerships we’ve built over the decades,” said Parrish Scarboro, CEO of San Dimas Community Hospital. “We thank our community members for entrusting us with their care, and we look forward to continuing this legacy of excellence for many more years to come.”

The hospital’s 50th anniversary was in 2021, during the height of Covid-19. The celebration was safely pushed until this year, with a ribbon cutting event held on July 10. The commemorative event was attended by notable community leaders, including San Dimas Mayor Emmett Badar, Councilmembers Eric Nakano and Rachel Bratakos, Alex Avanesyan from Senator Susan Rubio’s office, Jim Elliot from the Bonita Unified School District Board, and legislative representatives from the offices of Assemblymember Chris Holden, Congresswoman Grace Napolitano, and Supervisor Kathryn Barger. These representatives presented ceremonial certificates of appreciation and extended their best wishes.

Many of those in attendance shared their positive personal experiences of having been a patient at San Dimas Community Hospital or their association with the hospital. Senator Susan Rubio presented a certificate that stated, “I commend your commitment to investing in our local community and your dedication to providing quality healthcare. Your outstanding efforts to improving the welfare of others will continue to have a profound impact on our community.” Assemblymember Chris Holden shared, “Your mission of delivering compassionate, quality care to patients and better healthcare to communities has had a profound impact and is deeply appreciated.”

San Dimas Community Hospital has been nationally recognized by Healthgrades for its clinical and patient safety excellence over the years. San Dimas Community Hospital has also received five-star ratings for Hip Fracture Treatment for 11 consecutive years. For these designations, Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes that include risk-adjusted mortality and complications. Further accolades include recognition from the Lown Institute for patient safety and consistent “A” grades in patient safety from The Leapfrog Group. Leapfrog uses more than 30 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and information from other supplemental data sources. An “A” grade is the highest possible mark to receive.

Additionally, San Dimas Community Hospital has received two American Heart Association Achievement Awards for implementing quality improvement measures that ensure cardiovascular patients receive efficient and coordinated care. The awards included the Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke GOLD and Get With The Guidelines® – Heart Failure GOLD PLUS.

The hospital also earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Primary Stroke Center Accreditation, reflecting its commitment to improving outcomes for stroke patients. Along with serving as a Primary Stroke Center for stroke emergencies, the hospital has Geriatric Emergency Department accreditation for specializing in emergency care for seniors, and also implemented GetCareNow. This innovative service allows patients to reserve an ER appointment for non-life-threatening emergencies, reducing wait times and providing a more efficient and convenient healthcare experience.

This year, San Dimas Community Hospital leadership, staff and physicians were honored to receive recognition as the “Favorite Hospital of the Inland Empire” by Inland Valley Daily Bulletin readers and “Favorite Hospital of the San Gabriel Valley” by San Gabriel Valley Tribune readers.

“Receiving recognition for exceptional care and service to the San Dimas community is truly an honor and a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our staff and physicians,” added Scarboro. “Our team’s unwavering commitment to patient safety and positive health outcomes are directly showcased in these accomplishments. Fifty years is only made possible due to our loyal community, staff and physicians. We are honored to serve and will continue to strive for excellence in patient care.”
